Should I read books about languages and frameworks?

Interested in what anyone thinks about this.
There is an opinion that books (a la JavaScript: Definitive Guide, Agile Development With Rails) are full of water and that it is more efficient to read guides (MDN, RailsGuides) and then develop something and use documentation / specifications.
How do you think?
PS: we are talking about ready-made developers, and not about those who start from scratch.
PPS: we are talking about books about something specific (languages, frameworks), and not about architecture, patterns or the like.

I think it’s more fun and productive to start with manuals and all sorts of practical articles, but for a deep and complete understanding of all the details, the same Definite Guide is very worth reading.

My personal opinion:
- Such books will be useful only for beginners. For programmers with experience, it is easier and more efficient to read the documentation and see the device of a project where a PL or a framework is used.

It does, especially about languages like Erlang or Haskell . Often, in this way, you can discover new approaches, which can then be applied in programming in any other languages.
