Should I move to GameDev from Database Applications?
Good afternoon!
I work in an insurance company as a programmer, grew out of support in the same office. In general, experience in IT == 2 years. I am engaged in the completion / development of applications for insurance software. In my work I use PL\SQL and, to a lesser extent, Java. I consider myself an intelligent member of the team.
All my life I loved and love computer games most of all.
Questions:
Does it make sense for a programmer to change the field of activity to "seems more interesting", because knowledge of the subject area, which is sometimes needed, is actually "thrown out"?
What do you need to learn to get into GameDev? Or maybe it's worth trying to join a team of enthusiasts - in the evenings and for free, as an intern?

Do what interests you, otherwise you are wasting your life.
Any knowledge is not superfluous and comes in handy even in those areas that you did not even think about.

Toaster should already be renamed to "Should I go to game dev? I really want to game dev."
Because they didn't. This is hellish work.
But it never hurts to try something new.
In gamedev, you need smart DBAs, postgres, and muscle. But gamedev is tough. I can tell you this with almost four years of game development experience. Over there fresh habrahabr.ru/post/215853 read and answer for yourself, if the option is "with the ability to do work, calmly go home and do whatever you want." then gamedev is not for you. And yes, by going into gamedev you will sacrifice the ability to play games. You will begin to see all the details of their device and may lose the opportunity to enjoy the game.
