Should I mess with TinyMCE?

We need a simple and convenient editor that will be easy to tie to the site on a self-written engine. Will TinyMCE work?

Decide on the task, you need a "engine for creating simple sites" or a WYSIWYG editor (visual content editor).
In the first case, TinyMCE won't help.
In the second, why not. I wouldn't rashly call it the only or best solution. But with the right settings it is one of the best for sure.

Alternatively, take a look at CKEditor and Imperavi.

It is very easy to screw on, including as a plugin for jQuery. Supports compression as a ZIP file - loads almost immediately.
In general, I recommend. I consider it the best.
