Should a web designer think about SEO?

I made a website for the customer (design + layout), the customer liked everything. Then he hired SEO, he was told in some places it was necessary to redo the site, because users leave it and they don’t like something, after that he turned to me and asked me to make changes to the site for free, supposedly these are my mistakes and I owe them to correct. Who is right?

See what he asks. If you have taken up the layout and do not chop in the semantics of html (you don’t know the rules for placing headings, and what article header footer, etc. tags are used for), then either master the layout normally, or don’t undertake it. If the SEO specialist requires you to insert micro-markup and meta tags, then let him arrange it himself, or hire a layout designer as his assistant. Feel free to send such requirements, they do not apply to design (as well as proposals to rearrange the button if there is no clause about n free edits in the contract with the customer), otherwise texts with videos will also be hung on you.
In general, it sounds strange: “because customers leave it,” I worked in one company, where one girl was instructed to develop the site, she also stated: “because the client clicks on the link and leaves,” I asked her to show me the Yandex metric Specifically, those moments when the client leaves by clicking on this link, in the end it turned out that she does not know what it is at all and her phrases are based not on facts, but on personal subjective experiences. Did this SEO interview all the clients who left to claim this, or does he have reliable statistics on similar sites with the same channels and the same products? Or maybe he was brought up by bmshchik and for him if the button is not yellow and not big enough - the client leaves?

Here's how to agree. If there was an agreement with the TK and the customer accepted the work, there should be no questions for you and you do not owe anything to anyone for free. If there was no contract and TK - a common situation, but here your mistakes must be reasoned, because. the look at the usability of the site can be subjective.

At the moment
Everything is approved and accepted - it means that you are not obliged to correct something.
If you still think that it was your mistake - correct it.
For the following tasks
Yes, of course, the designer must think about usability. And the coder is about both usability and SEO. These are the characteristics of a good designer and layout designer.

There is definitely no mistake on your part. But the customer can be understood.
In theory, it won’t hurt a designer to master the basics of SEO, or rather, it will be your competitive advantage over others.
It is desirable, of course, for you to find a compromise
