Shadow for text - why?

Why do you need a shadow for the text?
Doesn't the text look good without the shadow? Just in a couple of videos on development (including Sorax'a) I saw that they add text-shadow for the test.

For example, you need to place text on a colorful background. The shadow will act as a stroke, and all letters will be readable on both light and dark areas of the background.
There can be many more reasons - what the designer will get into his head

Ну как правило всякие эффекты для объектов добавляются с целью выделения информации, либо для сохранения стиля дизайна. Не надо забывать, что тень сейчас можно по разному редактировать через CSS. Пиксели, размытость, цвет.
Но я соглашусь, что в большинстве случаев тень пихают куда попало, даже туда где она не нужна. Тут действуют по принципу: "Я могу сделать тень - значит я сделаю тень. За Орду!". Ну а потом приходите вы и спрашиваете на кой черт она нужна?
