Setting up WSS on which system is more convenient?

Hello.
Need to make a WSS (SSL) web socket connection. I made sockets for a long time, WS worked fine on port 8880, and WSS was throwing a timeout error, although there was HTTPS on the site. VPS server with NGINX, I read something about how to set it up, but I still don’t understand ... WS remains.
And here again I have an empty VPS. What system is better to put on it to make it easier with WSS? Ubuntu or NGINX? How then can you configure WSS? Can you please elaborate on how and why. I just learned how to write the whole thing, and then put it on the server correctly - no ... I found something about a proxy. But what role does the proxy play?

Install nginx, raise https on it, create a location in which you register a proxy for your ws service, of course with header proxying. For examples, go to Google with the request "nginx https" and "nginx websocket proxy", there are a ton of manuals, 95% of them are a copy of one manual, so I think you'll figure it out
