Selling website templates, is it worth it?

Hello gentlemen.
If you make your own site templates and sell them to companies such as template monster, well, or not to them, but to those who buy templates and sell them, is it profitable?
Have you been involved in such activities? Or is the game not worth the candle and in the entire history of the template will be bought 5-7 times maximum?
What percentage of the total cost does the company pay for the template?
If the template is, say, $50, will I get at least $25?
I'm requesting a cool story on this topic. Thank you.

themeforest.net/ multiply the price by the number of purchases… and the theme author gets 40-45%.

Cool story examples: www.mannodesign.com/service $250 per template, blogoart.ru/prices/ — from $340 per template. 8.5% of all sites on the network work on WP (you can find the corresponding news on opennet.ru). So, custom-made templates (by the way, do you care what to make them for - WP, Drupal (1% of all sites), Joomla (another 1% of all sites) or Bitrix?) is a promising business. Of course, you don’t need to sell them only through intermediaries. Earn freelance turnips or start a blog where you write about design and post free templates for seeding.
By the way, I may need a template soon, for which I would gladly give a hundred or two UE. So please send examples of work and contacts in a personal. Just in case :)

If you make a high-quality and beautiful product, promote it, then ... they will burst it. As happens with TM, YooTheme and the like.
IMHO, the way out is to negotiate with each customer personally and it is for him to make a unique design.

the question is what do you want to do?
1. a resource on which other people will post designs for sale
2. draw and stamp designs yourself beautifully
in option 1 you need to invest a lot of money in site promotion and promotion (it seems to me a dead number)
in option 2, it all depends on your coolness :) Design one site can cost $500, the main thing is to be able to draw it;)

There is a steady demand for website templates for online stores. You can sell both through the shops of software manufacturers and search for requests on the forums.
But as in other areas, it is much more difficult to sell than to make. It is very difficult to stand out among thousands of the same faceless ones. You have to have a nose, to get into fashion. If the author opens the talent of sales, it will be easy to hire a bunch of "blacks" for development itself.

If you are engaged in creating templates, then you should focus on foreign buyers. It is also possible on Russians, but the earnings will be many times less.

A Russian-language resource, young but with high-quality templates, mostly owners. The promised percentage is from 50 to 70 to webmasters, but registration is closed - you need to write to them and show your portfolio, only good specialists are selected, in their opinion.
