Remote work for a system administrator, is there such a thing in nature?
How much I watched, usually remote work like this to find it on the Internet and work through the Internet comes across only for programmers of various profiles, designers, but I never came across something for system specialists, the only thing that generally got into the information field was to go physically get settled and work remotely (how lucky), and here the question has recently surfaced:
Is official remote employment an exception or a rule?
there a person asks about employment and the emphasis is on individual entrepreneurs, and general answers regarding individual entrepreneurs or employment in general, but I’m also interested in employment (IT is not so important) and freelance, I would like to hear more practical answers on this topic
Specifically, I practically only unlearned about me, worked for 9 months in the tax office, then they cut it, then "kalym" and so on trifles I'm from the village, I don't have much experience, but there is, in fact, it is desirable that something through the Internet, in extreme cases, the city is understandable, perhaps I searched badly and there are some offers on freelance sites, if so,
What is approximately indicated in them? there are sites offering their services, but then again, how exactly to offer services and what will be expected from me? of employment search on ad sites and look there remotely and according to requirements? or is it all a dream and system engineers only physically go and work?
To the possible question "what, in fact, were you going to do? You can’t change the motherboard through the Internet," well, it’s possible to set up some kind of software, if, for example, for a long-term perspective and I show myself, maybe I can tweak something on the server, or maybe there are some narrow directions about which I don’t know, again I’ll repeat if something looks strange or stupid for you, I’m not a seasoned system specialist and I don’t know many things, but I’ll find out, it’s a bit long, thanks for reading it)
So it turns out the following according to the answers (for myself and maybe who stumbles):
In principle, it is possible, but it is easier to learn python and letsgo (easy), if you don’t want to:
-You will have to gain experience in "physical" practice, then you are already familiar with the technologies that are used and you already know what you can apply remotely and look for what suits you because there are a lot of directions and you can’t write everything.
-We use the key: remote devops -I have
not encountered, I will note for the future about:
Clouds: AWS, Azure, Digital Ocean, etc.
DevOps: CI/CD, Heroku and that's it

What admins usually work with remotely:
Clouds: AWS, Azure, Digital Ocean, etc.
DevOps: CI/CD, Heroku and that's it
. Surely something else.
When he freelanced himself, he didn’t even take up setting up servers and releasing processes, he always convinced the customer to hire a qualified specialist for this. For a long time I worked with a man who took 50 bucks an hour for his work, but then he raised the bar and we broke up, but continued to communicate from time to time. According to him, he did not see a lack of work. So from my own experience I will say that a freelance admin is very possible.
So it goes.
Judging by the answers, admins are divided into two large classes:
Second-class admins can be freelancers, but they do not immediately become them. Dilemma...
"and what, in fact, was going to do that? You can't change the motherboard through the Internet, after all"
Sysadmins are just trying to configure the equipment so that they can be less physically present next to the hardware or eliminate the presence altogether. This just makes it possible to work remotely, however, experience is needed to bring the quality of the setup to this level.
Of course, the employer has a desire to get a Swiss knife as a person, who, in addition to the work of the administrator, will also be engaged in iron repair. If you want pure administration, then working with hardware repair will be useful if you have never encountered it. If you become a seasoned specialist, then definitely not.
Linuxoids are all uninstallers, with Windows users it’s understandable that this doesn’t work, since all user problems cannot be solved remotely
As far as I can see (maybe distorted) 2 groups of admins work remotely.
1. Quite highly specialized tasks that are required infrequently, for example, this is how they work with native Asterisk. When there is a full-time admin, but he does not have enough competence in a narrow area, he can provide remote access and manually reboot the piece of iron.
2. Areas where everything is done remotely: WEB administration (the notorious LAMP), clouds, cloud virtualization.
I have not seen remote enikeevs (I assume the level of an administrator with less than a year of experience in the tax office) and have never heard of them.
With Windows, the problem is not in remote access, but in the qualifications of users, including managers, who, quite reasonably, believe that you cannot change the cartridge in the printer remotely (and the user, of course, is not able to do this, by definition) and the power button on the monitor is not click (when "the computer is broken, the lights are flashing, and the screen is black")
I don't even know how realistic it is to advise "linux and the console" when you want to eat today.
