Remote launch of programs in linux?

Somewhere I saw material about the following: We connect to a remote linux machine via ssh, we run a program there and the program running on a remote linux machine is somehow launched on my machine. This is real?

This will work slowly and sadly when it comes to transferring X via the Internet.
The fastest way to do this is to use VirtualGL - it uses the accelerator on the remote machine and compresses the frames with jpeg for transmission over the network.
At worst, x11vnc will go
