recommend messenger for linux
Switched to ubuntu, looking for a convenient messenger. The main protocols are ICQ, Jabber, Skype.
As it turned out, the most difficult to find metacontacts.
I would also like to sync. But no one seems to have it.

pidgin empathy. Both are multi-protocol, in general, they are not bad. empathy has a terrible interface by default, both are gtk, on qt - kopete
pidgin
holds ICQ, Jabber and Skype. Through Jabber, you can also pick up a mail agent.
I also use qutim. Still, qip 2010 works through wine, but still not Unix Way :))
gajim.
And Skype is still better to use through the off-client.
I also use gluco'qutim'om simply because pidgin/emptathy have very inconvenient and not usable interfaces that are not treated by plugins. Here Kopete can be configured to a convenient state - but it is QT and pulls too many KDE dependencies. I also tried mdc.ru/ - the ideas are interesting, but still something didn’t suit me in it. Also did not suit Instantbird.
Licq is also not bad, but it looks too ancient.
Now I'm waiting for the linux version of www.digsby.com , but something hasn't been moving for a month now.
I use kopete under sneakers. It does not differ in convenience, but it supports a lot of things. I'm used to it already. And Skype, in my opinion, only Skype can do it.
I think that SafeUM will be just what you need. Works on all semi-polar platforms!
Lately I've been using VIPole messenger . Lots of features and good security
