Accordingly - a container for content 1200 px. Only pictures go beyond these limits. If the width of the layout was not agreed with the customer, which one to take?

Width (just like all other parameters of the future interface) is selected individually based on the theme, functionality, target audience and its features, designer's ideas and other nuances. Stop looking for one universal and start thinking broader))
First, look at the statistics of monitor resolutions, and then discuss with the client and offer solutions.
PS What is written is relevant if convenient sites are being made, if you do not care as soon as for the sake of payment, then you can take any width that Google will give out on the request “what is the width of the site”.

IMHO. 1000px is still the best option. If earlier it was a choice justified by the most popular resolution, now it is something between tablets and widescreen monitors. If there is only one layout, then it is better to rely on this width. From it it will be quite simple then to make both a larger width and a smaller one.

It used to be customary to take about 960 pixels as the work area. This was due to the 1024px resolution.
1200 (1170) is a certain standard. Most often, this is a bootstrap grid to make it more convenient to make adaptive layout.
When I draw layouts myself, I always make a common area of 1920px, so that it is convenient to view the layout. (Gives the visual correctness of the layout) . And it depends on your design idea. Yes, and with the grid, very template sites are obtained.

Any take, unless a separate condition is stipulated. Everyone's goals and tastes are different. The problem with scaling to fit the screen should, in theory, be solved by viewport scale=1.0 (like it, but I can make a mistake, check the information additionally). In general, such questions often come up here. Particularly touching are people who are worried that their layout does not fit the default size of the bootstrap. Although the bootstrap is configured at the build stage. I will advise you not to file your feet with a file for shoes, but simply select shoes according to the size of your feet.

It must be said that this is one of the most key points of the TK.
