"proxy" not working in package.json in React app. What to do?

I develop applications on React. Two ports are running, localhost:3000 (react) and localhost:8000 (backend).
React project's package.json file specified "proxy" : " localhost:8000 " but it doesn't work. It still sends requests to the frontend.
