Paid GitHub - what happens to a closed repository after the subscription has expired?

I'm thinking about buying a paid Github subscription to maintain my projects, but the question arises, what if I don't pay for the subscription - what will happen to the repositories? Can I download them?
For example, on paid hosting, I was faced with the fact that at the end of the subscription, I could not access sites, for example, download their databases - which I did not like at all. Is it the same with github?
