I tried to load the sitemap in the classical way to the root of the folder, but nothing is displayed when I click on the direct link. i.e. the files are empty.
Tell me, what are the nuances and how to do it right?

If the SEOurl module is used, then the .htaccess contains a redirect from sitemap.xml to the google_sitemap module.
If the module is disabled, then a blank page is returned.
You can enable the module and the sitemap will be generated automatically. You can remove the redirect from .htaccess or put your file in a separate folder instead of the root.
