On fingers, what is the difference between NaCl and Signal protocols?

tox messenger uses the first protocol, Signal - the second one.
There is very little information about the Tox protocol. What is its essence, in a few words? how is authentication achieved, that is, understanding that the right interlocutor is at the other end?
