OC Linux began to behave incomprehensibly. How to fix it?

Good afternoon!
OC Linux Mint 17.
Today I turn on the laptop and immediately notice that google chrome has disappeared, installed it on a new one, launched it and everything that I had there, everything was left.
After that, I launched my server-client project (TCP Sockets) in the console and noticed that during actions with files I get errors, that the file is not found or the path is written incorrectly. I launched the same project on the same Ubuntu laptop - the project works fine.
After, when I entered the console mode, I noticed that some obscure hieroglyphs are mixed up in the console instead of full words.
+ when I open nautilus, the directories are displayed with 3 columns, and not 4 as it was.
In the last inclusion, before such nonsense appeared, I did not do anything new and did not install it.
What's going on with Linux anyway? How can I fix this?

It also looks like a problem with the file system (or disks). Restart single and do a fsck.

Sounds like a memory problem.

Yes, it looks like a memory problem, you can check with the memtest utility. I think that this can still happen when the sync call does not work on shutdown - in this case, you need to manually call sync on shutdown and look at the mount options in /etc/fstab, although, as a rule, there is a default delay in Linux for performance improvement. Try echo 'test' > temp_file.txt, then sync, reboot and check if there is such a file. In any case, there can be many reasons, look at the logs. Are you sure you didn't install any updates?

Linux doesn't break down just like that, we look at our latest actions and check ...
