NodeMCU: handy toolkit?

I decided to try to write programs for ESP8266 + NodeMCU, and the question of convenient tools arose.
Already wrote a couple of hello worlds in ESPlorer, but the program is just awful.
Let's say I have a normal editor for lua (VS Code), I don't even dream about an IDE.
How can I copy the current working project to the device?
I found a more or less working version https://github.com/AndiDittrich/NodeMCU-Tool (you will have to write a set of build scripts around it for the project, but this suits me)
And not working https://github.com/kmpm/ nodemcu-uploader
Both are out of active support. Is everything that bad with tools?
How to execute a single command on a device?
Which convenient port monitor to use?
Do you have remote code debugging?

@gbg

For debugging hardware, I recommend OpenOCD and JTAG
