Tell me, does nginx interact with python or a node only when a request for an html document comes in?
Does the rest of the requests for pictures and styles immediately process itself?

As you set it, so be it. If you configure, for example, that it processes existing files itself, and climbs to another server for non-existent ones, then it will do so.
