I used the following method to debug a GPS device:
1) I took a laptop with a USB GPS receiver connected and drove / walked along the streets, where I later had to check the performance of a real device. I recorded all the maxims coming from the NMEA GPS receiver on a laptop into a text file using the terminal;
2) for debugging, instead of a GPS receiver, I connected a converter on a MAX3232 chip to which, using the terminal, I fed the recorded text sequence. Adjustment of delays ms/symbol and ms/line (available, for example, in the Tera Term terminal) allows you to achieve a flow rate similar to a "live" GPS receiver;
3) to debug upper-level computer software, you can simply plug in a cable between COM1 and COM2, send an NMEA sequence from the terminal to COM1, use COM2 for debugging instead of a GPS receiver.
