Mutt limiting the number of messages displayed?

I still have about 20k useful messages left after clearing my inbox.
But, as a rule, I do not have a need to look through old letters (perhaps only in the case of a search).
Is there some way in the mutt config to limit the number of messages displayed to, say, a hundred?
PS. I know that it is possible to set a filter by the number of messages after starting mutt, but I don’t want to do it manually every time.
