Modifying a partition like "ext3"?

There is Linux Mint 9. I allocated 6 gig for the OS, but miraculously managed to fill them with software and other things.
Tried:
1. LiveCD GParted - from another partition of the same type, I was able to take away a dozen gigs, but could not add to the main one, when I try to change the main partition, it writes that the unallocated space is 0.
2. Directly under Mint, the same GParded. There does not allow to change anything at all, because it is mounted.
3. Acronis Disk Director 11 - I see it for the first time, but it defines two text3 partitions as "unknown type".
How to be? What else to try?
