The following story happened to me: over the years, all sorts of different Linuxes have visited my laptop. Not to say that there were many of them ... As I can remember now, these were: ubuntu, openSuse, calculate Linux, Sabayon and some more. When I installed Ubuntu (it was the first after Windows), I discovered a very annoying thing: the wi-fi speed did not want to rise above 50-70 Kb / s. And I tried this and that, but in Linux there was still such an insignificant speed, despite the fact that rebooting into Windows, there were all the required 2 Mb / s. As a result, I put up with this fact (updated and installed programs on the wire). The same was repeated in all subsequent, above-mentioned operating systems. But, just recently, I installed Fedora 15 and “Oh, miracle!”, The speed was as it should be.
Here, in fact, the following question is of interest, why did everything become normal in Fedora with speed? And because of what in other Linuxes the speed was so limited?

I would venture to suggest that the speed was limited by one of the Power management options. Low power modes for wifi adapters reduce their operating speed and reception quality.

Intel 5150? With some (curved) access points, it gives out such speeds for n. Do:
sudo modprobe -r iwlagn && sudo modprobe iwlagn 11n_disable=1

The point is firewood for this card, only. Which ones did you install and did you install (maybe it worked for you out of the box), were there any proprietary alternatives to them (closed drivers).
It just needed to be sorted out in the first place.
Now, perhaps, they have already completed the open version of firewood, and it began to work for you on F15 without problems.
