Mining bitcoins in a pool: what kind of task does the pool send, header structure?

Do I understand correctly that in the task that the pool sends to the miner, there are already merkle root heaps of transactions and I can only pick up nonce and in a small range (low byte) timestamp?
What specific parts of the block does the pool allow the miner to pick up?
