Minimum space to install Ubuntu?

I want to install Ubuntu 16 on external hdd.
What is the minimum space needed for the root and home partitions?

I have installed on an external drive, a standard installation of 16.10 x64 plus all updates and a few small programs, the root and user folder together are less than 7GB.

This information is available on the off site of the distribution, and before installation, the availability of space will be checked, and if it is not enough, the installation will abort.
