I have several files with .mpp extension. A few days ago, I opened one of the files in MS Project 2016 and the application showed a message: The file cannot be opened. How to solve this problem? Any suggestions...

Perhaps the file was created in an old version that MS Project 2016 does not support.
Try to open with open project
