Meta tags not set via API?

Wrote a class that sets meta tags. I call the class methods in the catalog.section component template.

The problem is that the meta doesn't change. I do it like this:

$APPLICATION->SetPageProperty("keywords", "test keywords here");

In the section's SEO settings, unchecked the "Edit for this section and its subsections" checkbox. What with it, what without - the result is one. Meta tags do not change.
