Many directories for one table?

How to correctly organize the connection of one table with many directories? While there were 10 of them, they were stored in columns. Now there are 50 of them and I have vague doubts that adding 40 more columns is the right decision. Experience with Gulkin's nose - tell me the right (practical) solution.
