Linux on an old but favorite laptop instead of win7?

There is a wonderful laptop that was not powerful even at the time of purchase, about 5 years ago (i3-2367 1.4 GHz, 4Gb RAM). It's been through a lot by now, but above all Win7 doesn't work well because of bugs. And if it works, it's very slow. There is no need to change to a new one, and it is not possible. I have no experience with Linux systems. Everyday work with a laptop: photo editors, instant messengers, office, etc.

Is it correct to assume that the Linux shell on such hardware will work faster than Win7 and will allow an average confident PC user to use popular software? If so, do you think this idea is worth pursuing? What would you recommend to install? Maybe there are special versions of windows for low-performance laptops? I don’t want to write off a laptop at all, but in its current form it can no longer work.

photo editors, instant messengers, office

Linux can be faster than win7, but only if you're good at it and know what to do.
In your case, you will spend a lot of time, but the result will be so-so, it is more optimal to turn time into money and buy a normal laptop.
There are photo editors and an office suite in Linux, but they are quite peculiar and I would not say that they are lighter than their counterparts in Windows from the word at all.
In general, Linux is certainly good, but it will not help you with these specific problems of yours.
Your Win7 is not slow, but rather the software you use.
And yes, as mentioned above, adding RAM and an SSD now can make a big difference in performance.

I would advise Debian or Ubuntu or Mint Well, if possible, add up to 8 memory and install an SSD

Do not install linux if you do not have the time and opportunity to deal with it.

In any case, Linux is faster than Windows, but not all modern programs work under it, there are programs sharpened only for Windows, there are analogues of programs for Linux, but at least this may not be familiar at first. for standard functions, such as the Internet, photo, video, it will do, for games and any specific programs, it is necessary to approach this issue based on the requirements of these programs.

And I would advise you to run the DISM ++ utility on Win7, clean up all the mess that has accumulated.
Or a more radical way - to put Windows again.

No, there is no point in installing Linux.

Linux shell on such hardware will run faster than Win7

And this is a wrong assumption.
There is no support for old equipment, most likely, half of the filling will not start.
But you can try Xubuntu, for example, if you're willing to put in the time.
I would leave the Seven.

Is it true that the Linux shell on such hardware will run faster than Win7

True, but only in part.
Linux always has problems with laptops. Not because linux is bad, but because laptop manufacturers write their firewood only for Windows, and often only for a certain version of Windows, so even let's say under XP it can stupidly not start. On the delivered linux, half of the devices can easily not work, and they will have to be started using a saw, an ax and some kind of mother.
Linux - they are different. Of course, you can try mint or bubuntu of the year the laptop was released.
There may not be (and most likely will not be) the usual software. There is no M$ office for Linux, no photoshop. Just no. And it won't. Never.
(We don’t consider Wine - firstly, it still doesn’t work, and secondly, install linux in order to run Windows apps in it through wine - this is mmm ... stupid :) )
You will need a lot of time to switch - because what see point .1 - installation will take a lot of time (if this is not the case, you are lucky)

The patient is shown an older version of Hackintosh.
Linux has nothing to do with it so much that the question is more like a sketch.

Fedora Spins https://spins.fedoraproject.org/
I would recommend LXDE.
Download, run from the CD - it will launch your system in live mode and you will be able to evaluate what it is and how fast it works. Like it - put it on your hard drive.

I3! and 4GB? !!!!! Works slowly?!!!
I have a netbook daughter who is 12 years old! N450 atom and 2gb memory. I installed a 60gb SSD and win7 home ext. On ssd I keep only the system and applications. I put the SD on 64gb and everything works! Put an SSD, put the seven simpler. If there was a DVD drive, stick an old screw in there and keep the
data on it. Everything will run very fast.
