If you are starting to program controllers, I highly recommend Amperka .
There are ready-made kits, instructions, and videos. Cross-references are very convenient: choose a part and see what else is needed to complete the project.

Looking in which direction to move. There are serious controllers designed for led displays and tapes, for advertising, architectural lighting and the like. If you highlight something at home, then arduino + ws2812b is not bad for a start, you can even make a display out of it ... you can use esp8266 instead of arduino, then you can steer the backlight via the Internet
