Learning JavaScript, how to proceed?

Hello colleagues.
A question. I have been working as a back-end-er on php for 6 months.
I want to learn JavaScript in parallel (mainly for node development, but I also thought to cover the frontend).
I know html and css without problems, I read it well. Only now I have never fully made up websites.
A question. Is it necessary to be proficient in layout and know various subtleties (that is, to get your hand on the layout itself) so that you can offer yourself on the market as a front-end - but in JavaScript, or is practice in layout not so important when JavaScript is revitalized - oh sites ?

@Karpion

Decent programs are designed so that the interfaces (to the user, to the network, to the storage system) are separated from the data processing algorithms. This is to make it easier to port the program to where the interfaces are different.
Small programs - one person writes; there, the separation of interfaces-and-algorithms is often violated.
Large programs - written by many people; and the separation of interfaces-and-algorithms is necessary, incl. for the division of labor. And here m.b. programmers who know algorithms well, but have poor layout skills are in demand.
Have I expressed my thoughts clearly enough?
