Java webapp (.war) external web.xml?

Hello.
Is it possible to take the web.xml application descriptor file out of the .war? For example, the context.xml file can be put in [tomcat]/conf/Catalina/localhost/[appname].xml. Can you do a similar trick with web.xml?

There, it seems, you can set a global DD with global settings ( $catalina.home/conf/web.xml) in order to fumble them in applications and inherit your configs.
