Is there one wallet for multiple cryptocurrencies?

I just started reading what coins are and therefore I can’t understand a simple thing. Previously used webmoney and bank accounts. There you can have different currencies in one "purse". Is there such a thing with cryptocurrencies? I saw some web-based solutions where you can store both ether and bitcoins, but there is not much trust in such companies. And having a wallet on the local machine for each currency is a terrible thing, given the dimensions of these wallets on the hard drive.
Maybe there is something in common?
