Is there a script to automatically create virtual machine snapshots?

Goal: Automatically create virtual machine state snapshots. And so that there are no more than 5 of them. If the 6th one is created, then the 1st one is deleted.
At first I thought to write the script myself, but I thought: maybe someone has already solved a similar problem?

Host system: Ununtu 12.04
Virtual environments: VirtualBox 4.2 and VMware Workstation 9

If you do not need much flexibility with setting the intervals between snapshot creations, then for VMware Workstation this can be done with the built-in functionality: AutoProtect

For VirtualBox - apparently write the script yourself using VBoxManage
www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch08.html#idp20288000 - it describes how to create and delete snapshots.
