It seems to me that you have an opinion that the problem is in some external factors - complex examples, a complex book, an unnecessary programming language ... These are all signs of a lack of motivation, you cannot compete with any student with this approach. Simply because for a real programmer it is a passion, and he practices all his free time.
You understand that with two equals, a more passionate programmer will be more motivated to complete complex tasks and will be more preferable in interviews, and even if you deceive a recruiter, in practice it will also show how much you really want to learn and overcome difficult tasks and technologies.
If you lack your own motivation, hire a tutor in the disciplines you need. Let some teacher try to persuade you to do something so that you study something.
