Quite popular alternative firmware is made by CyanogenMod. Works, as a rule, faster than stock firmware. www.cyanogenmod.org It's unlikely that anything will fly on 512, but it will be at least faster.

Which would fly great? 8-) It will fly perfectly from the balcony =)
I myself have a phone with <1GB of internal memory (Explay Tornado). 4 nuclear percent, in general, everything (except GPS) works more or less.
