In fact, the vast majority of drivers you only need are proprietary graphics drivers. Occasionally Wi-Fi or a card reader if the laptop is too new or some strange hardware.
For graphics drivers, each distribution has its own approaches - in Ubuntu / Mint the mentioned program + ppa with a fresh version. And about other distributions - you ask a question about a specific distribution - users will answer you, but I've never seen anything like that in common.
