Is the arduino alive?

An arduina pro mini came to me from China, I tried to connect it directly to rs232. Then I realized that the whole thing must be connected either via max232 to rs232, or to usb via pl / ftdi mikruhi. I connected via ftdi, but the sketch cannot be loaded, the error avrdude crashes: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00. I changed both the port speed and different boards in the IDE, but the error is the same. What could be? Atmega328 burned out due to direct connection to rs232? How else to check?
