Is temporary virtualization of Windows Server 2012 on VirtualBox viable?
Is it possible to temporarily install a trial version of windows server 2012 on VirtualBox for 180 days, transfer a domain controller there, and then transfer it to a normal windows server 2012?
Will a domain controller work fine on VirtualBox?

Certainly.
It's better to leave it there, just take something serious for virtualization like ESXi, etc.
Why not? Tools from virtualbox are installed - an analogue of paravirtual firewood and forward. The host only needs to be of sufficient power. And indeed, you can leave it there, because DC (if only DC is there) does not eat any mega-resources and it’s a pity to allocate a separate machine for this purpose :)
