Is it really possible to make money on website templates?
Good day, friends!
I make a living creating websites ... But something has become annoying. Maybe I'm tired of the theater of one actor, maybe I'm just tired of the sphere ... But I can say for sure that I feel pleasure when a beautiful website comes out from under my pen.
There was an idea to start working not for certain clients, but simply to make templates. Regular CSS+HTML templates without reference to CMS. So I will do something beautiful, without being tied to deadlines, for the soul. And yet, in the template you can experiment - do as I see fit, not the customer. All this is good, but how can it be monetized?
What is the market situation? Do people buy ready-made html+css templates? Where and how can you sell them?
I would really appreciate your answers and advice. Thank you!
09/12/2015 UPD:
I'll try to make a couple of templates and put them on themeforest.
There was an idea about additional monetization of templates: they started writing a site with purely their own creations, asking for a smaller amount for templates, but then everything is 100% for me. And it will also be possible in the future to offer clients something like: a unique design from scratch to suit the needs - 40-50-60 thousand, on one of my ready-made templates - 10-15-20k. And everyone is happy.

Here are the top selling HTML templates on Themeforest.
Compare your templates with what they offer there, based on this, and you can evaluate your chances.
They don’t require money for registration, tidy up a few templates (so that they look no worse), make a live preview of them, put them up for sale, tell friends and ask for a repost - something will definitely drop.
I don't think you can live with pure CSS + HTML. In this case, you need a lot of orders, which are very cheap at cost. HTML + CSS is essentially the very base of any web programmer (designer), so the competition is huge. If you add JS, jQuery and all sorts of frameworks to this and engage in pure front-end. Then it's another matter, and there everything depends on you, your popularity, the quality of work and your "marketability".
And so, think for yourself, give a student with no experience an order to make a business card website for a bottle of beer - he will do it.
Realistically, you just need a quality approach.
You can make good money on Themeforest, especially if these are templates for WordPress.
The main thing is to choose the right trend, good design and code accordingly.
on themeforest you can see who buys how much. It's just that html templates don't seem to be very quoted.
I will speak for my studio, which works in the segment (80% of orders) "make a website inexpensively". Often I buy budget designs from megagroups, we bring them to mind a little. We do it ourselves. I mean, there are different needs, so you can sell the design separately, design + layout separately, as well as a complete set with adaptive layout.
PS Show the finished work, perhaps we will get cooperation. Sites are mostly made on MODx.
We have an offer for you!
Do you have any generic template? We insert it into our website builder sitev.ru. It will be in the category of paid templates... If someone chooses it, you'll get money!
PS There is one thing but... Our startup is still a bit damp...
Fyodor Ananin hello! After a while, please share the results? What did it all come to in the end?
