Is it possible to use sprites from an online game if the application is not going to be used for profit?

In my spare time I write an online game for iOS/MacOS platforms to improve my programming skills.
I would like to finally put it on the App Store and share it with friends (plus show it to a potential employer).
Will I get hurt during the publishing phase, or will there be problems with the owner of the online game whose sprites I use in the application?

You may not be tritely allowed into the store with the wording "looks like a copy."
And problems can also arise, if not legal, so simply at the store level (the application will be deleted through a complaint)
