Is it possible to update a ruby application by simply copying the necessary files?
I must say right away that I am not familiar with Ruby.
There is a legacy project. Changes need to be made. Some gems are not available for download.
Something needs to be fixed in the code.
Is it possible to just copy the updated files later? Or a compilation step or something else is needed.

You need to copy the files and restart the application process.
If there are changes in the DBMS schema, then they require a preliminary run of the migration command.
