Is it possible to sync an Android phone with third-party servers (non-Google)?

Phones running OS Andorid have built-in synchronization (contacts, calendar, etc.) with Google servers. Are there software implementations of the client and server parts for synchronization with third-party servers? Including for launching similar functionality on their site.

So far, all searches are reduced to the MS Exchange synchronization functionality, which is implemented on some firmware.
