A friend had a similar situation. Decided by a banal installation of QIP.
A small softinka was downloaded, which hid QIP and its notifications. In the settings, the sounds were turned off and that's it.
PS I don't know about offline, but it's not hard to check.
1) Turn off QIP

On Facebook, you can redirect messages to SMS or mail and archive (back up) your account with everything that is in it. I personally enable forwarding (notifications) to regular mail.
