Is it possible to restore a *NiX system using a boot disk using the [Update/upgrade] method?

Is it possible to restore a *NiX system using a boot disk [Boot/Recovery/Live], using the [Update/upgrade] method, that is, updating the system over the network? If so, how to do it in:
