Is it possible to put an unrealized project in the portfolio?

The order was for the redesign and layout of the site.
I did everything, but the order fell through (was never issued) for some reason.
The order was transferred through the developer (i.e. the customer himself is not particularly aware of it).
In fact, I only have my version of layout and redesign, the result will differ accordingly.
Is it possible to put this work in the portfolio or is it not appropriate (even if just as an example of layout and design)?

Quite.
Many users, after handing over their sites, disfigure them beyond recognition, while in the portfolio you can place a link to your copy so that you can see the form in which you gave the site to the customer.

Portfolio is your work. What the customer did with them later is another story.
Sometimes I post options in my portfolio that the customer did not accept or forced to redo in accordance with my ideas. Or several options that were offered.
But (!) there is a line in the contract that I have the right to post my work in my portfolio.
If the customer asked in advance not to do this, then naturally such work does not go anywhere.
There can also be several types of portfolio: public and private. Those. what is in the public domain or what I show at a meeting or upon request.

Did the project that included your work fail, or was it the order that was transferred to you?

If you have not signed an NDA type agreement, then by law all the work carried out belongs to you. Therefore, you can do whatever you want with them.
True, if they contain materials (image, logo, etc.) that belonged to the customer, then it is better to replace them.
Of course it would be more humane to ask the customer.
