Is it possible to process incoming mail on a php server with a script?

Good afternoon, there was a need to process incoming e-mail, and brings it into the database.
At the moment, I have solved this issue through IMAP, once every 10 minutes a script is launched on the server, collects information from mailboxes, and forms a queue for downloading and processing mail, after which, through imap, each letter is downloaded, filtered, and so on ..
This method suits me perfectly, but nevertheless all these events occur once in a while, is it possible to process incoming letters on the server immediately as soon as they arrive at the mail?
