Is it possible to determine what data is stored on the server in a particular directory?

Let's say we have a certain site and we don't have access to it, this site is called "mysite.com" how can we find out what is stored in this site, for example, the ''img'' folder, the "sounds" folder, how can we find out about existence of these folders on the server?

You can determine either by scanning the selection of the most popular names (admin, modules, templates), or download the site with some offline browser (Teleport Pro for Win; Site Sucker for OS X). But in any case, this way you will reveal only a part of the directories and most of them will most likely turn out to be virtual.
