Is it possible to clear dalvik-cache?

My /data/dalvik-cache folder is over 1GB on my tablet, but I'm using the ART runtime, why is dalvik-cache still being used? Or is it just garbage that is not automatically removed? Or are they compiled applications?

/data/dalvik-cache contains optimized dex files for each application, under the virtual machine of your gadget.
If the folder is cleared, the files in it will be recreated.
