Is it possible to check on plain http (not SSL) whether a particular certificate is installed on the client's machine (i.e. added to the trusted list)?

You can try to require a certificate from the client. But the client will have to manually select the desired one from the list. Well, if there is a program on the client side, then the program must issue the necessary certificate to the server.
