The Windows Embedded family has an EWF - Enhanced Write Filter component. It allows you to intercept all changes to the system disk partition and registry and save them in memory. Those. changes are somehow made, but after rebooting the system will be in its original form, or rather in the state of the last EWF commit. Try googling in that direction.
